Surviving Social Situations: Tips for People with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Does the thought of having to attend a party or big family get-together make you anxious? If so, here are some ways to help you prepare for the experience so you can enjoy your time with family, friends and others.

Plan Ahead

One way to help calm your nerves is to prepare for the event or activity ahead of time. For example, you may want to carefully review the directions, determine who and how many people will be there, and ask the host what sort of food will be available.

Think Positively

If you’re having any negative thoughts about the situation, try to challenge them. Ask yourself, “What are the chances that this negative thing will happen?” By looking at the upside of the situation, you’ll start to feel much better.

Practice What You’ll Say

Next, think of a few topics or current events that you could chat about with the other guests. You might also want to prepare a script of what to say when you meet someone, bid them farewell or answer questions like, “How are you doing today?”

Bring a Friend

Another recommendation is to ask a friend to attend the event with you. They can provide extra support and help you feel more comfortable.

Recognize Your Triggers

If you start to feel overwhelmed, it’s okay to leave or take a short break. This will give you a chance to recoup, collect your thoughts and get back to the party if you want.

Schedule Some Down Time

Socializing can be both fun and exhausting, so make a plan to relax and spend some time alone after the event is over. Going on a walk, journaling and listening to music are all great ways to decompress and relieve anxiety.

Remember, you’re not the only one who feels nervous and awkward in social situations. Lots of other people do too!
