Understanding the Emotions and Feelings of Others

Does it take you a little longer than others to figure out how someone is feeling? If so, you’re in good company. Many people with autism have trouble recognizing the facial expressions, body language and tone of voice of others.

Here are some tips to help you better understand the emotions and feelings of your loved ones and other people that you meet:

Observe Others Around You

Next time you’re watching a movie, talk to your family or friends about how you think the characters are feeling and why they might be feeling a certain way. This can help you learn how to identify other people’s emotions correctly

You can also watch the individuals around you at restaurants, on the bus or in your favorite store. Look at their body language and facial expressions then try to figure out what they might be feeling. 1 For example, if someone has their hands on their hips, they might be frustrated. Or if their eyebrows are raised, perhaps they’re surprised. And if they’re talking fast, maybe they are excited or nervous.

Actively Listen to What is Being Said

Pay close attention to what the other person is saying. Then try to put yourself in their shoes. Think about how you would feel in a similar situation. This simple tactic can help you better understand the other person’s perspective and feelings. Plus, it might help you figure out why they are reacting or behaving in a certain way

If you’re still not sure how the other person is feeling, you can always ask them! Although some people will tell you they’re fine, when they are not. So, it’s a good idea to pay attention to their body language to see if it matches what they are saying

Get Help from Trained Professionals

If you need additional support, consider working with a behavioral therapist. They can help you learn about the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Another suggestion is to join a social skills training group. This would allow you to focus on things like picking up on social cues and improving your social communication skills.

By practicing these tips and getting assistance from trained professionals, you’ll be well on your way to building stronger, deeper relationships and having better interactions with others.
